Islam: No Compulsion in Religion?

"Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in God hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And God heareth and knoweth all things." Surah 2:256
In view of the facts found in the articles, "Malaysia makes its case on conversion," "Sunday School Teachers Found Guilty of 'Christianization' in Indonesia," "Status of religious freedom in Malaysia" and many others, I find the Islamic teaching "no compulsion in religion" pretty hard to believe.

I thought this Quranic verse is pretty clear cut. So why force people to be Muslims? Where are all the Islamic teachers who are supposed to be condemning the harsh laws found in Islamic countries? Why not Islamic leaders give their citizens the freedom of choice to decide which religion to follow?

Unless Islamic countries actually put the teaching"no compulsion of religion" into practice, do not keep harping to the mass media that Islam is a religion of "peace." So pardon me for being skeptical of the actual intentions of Muslims.

To Muslims, if you truly believe that Islam is a "peaceful" religion, change your Islamic laws to reflect the teaching "no compulsion of religion." Allow missionaries of other religions to freely evangelize to everyone in Islamic countries. Allow each and every one the freedom to change religion. Do not discriminate against non-Muslims. Perhaps by doing so, that's where you Muslims would greatly gain the trust of non-Muslims.

Wow... you talk like real, man. Do yourself a favour and find out more about the religion before you comment like that. Your remarks while it's truely yours is rather sweeping and rather dangerous.

Please read what I have written carefully. My issue with certain Islamic countries is that they do not uphold a certain teaching that is written in the Quran i.e. Surah 2:256.

If Islam is truly a religion of peace, then as a peaceful religion, the Islamic leaders must show the world that Muslims are free to change religion and to adopt whatever beliefs they want.

Maybe you might want to go into specifics and provide me with the name of an Islamic country where Muslims are free to switch religion without any repercussions from the community, and where missionaries from other religions are allowed to preach to Muslims?
