Libertarianism

I have reading the Wikipedia article on libertarianism. For quite some time, I have been agreeing with the conservative Right on some issues while siding with the liberal Left on other issues. I did not know where to place myself politically. Hmm... it seems that I could now classify myself as a libertarian since I largely agree with most of its philosophy.
  1. Libertarianism is a political philosophy that holds that all individuals should have the liberty to do as they wish with themselves and their property as long as those actions do not infringe on the same liberty of others.
  2. Libertarians generally believe that governments should be held to the same moral standards as individuals. Thus, they oppose most or all governmental initiation of force, even if it is supported by a democratic majority.
  3. Libertarians oppose criminalization of victimless acts (or as the ancient common law maxim says: Volenti non fit injuria --to the willing person, no legal wrong is done).
  4. Most libertarians support the existence of government but advocate reducing the size and scope of government to the essential functions of protecting individual liberty, private property, and a free market.
  5. Libertarians argue that only individuals have rights. Thus, the government has no original rights but only those duties with which it has been lawfully entrusted by individual citizens.
  6. A popular perception of libertarians is that they would allow pollution of the environment. However, libertarians oppose environmental damage as an act of initiatory coercion and would impose civil or criminal penalties against it.
  7. Most libertarians are political allies with liberals on social issues like the role of religion (which they wish to minimize, especially in government) and nontraditional lifestyles (which they generally defend).
  8. Natural-law libertarians believe that intellectual property is but a monopoly privilege that would not exist but for government intervention, and that it should be abolished. To them, whatever secrecy and exclusivity are to exist should be achieved out of voluntary contracts, the cost of which are to be born by those who try to achieve secrecy and exclusivity.
  9. Many libertarians believe that a woman's ownership of her own body, and therefore her right to control it, includes her right to terminate her pregnancy without any interference.
  10. Most libertarians believe that death penalty is an extreme exertion of state power and is of little use in a free society, while it is of great use to tyrants.
  11. Most libertarians are suspicious of government intervention in the affairs of other countries, especially violent intervention.
Despite the above, I do not agree with most libertarians on the issue that homosexuality is a choice. I do hold on to the view that homosexuality is a mental disorder.

i have a similar conundrum. on the one hand, i want to protect the environment and tax rich people more, but on the other hand, i want to protect unborn children ... i think libertarians would probably be pro-choice, right?
